As North America prepared for the April 8th total solar eclipse, demand for short-term rentals in the path of totality surged. According to AirDNA’s Jamie Lane, 92% of Airbnb and Vrbo listings in the eclipse zone were booked for April 7th, far above the typical 30% occupancy rate. However, hosts missed out on major revenue gains by not raising prices in time, most bookings were made months in advance at standard rates. With only a modest increase in average nightly price, total extra revenue is estimated at just $44 million. Future eclipses in the U.S. won’t occur again until the 2030s and beyond.

On a typical Sunday night in April around 30% of homes listed for short-term rental on Airbnb or Vrbo in areas in or around the eclipse’s path are occupied.
