Kansas City is easing short-term rental restrictions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but so far demand has yet to spike, according to AirDNA. Chief economist Jamie Lane tells Axios that only 3% of available Airbnb and Vrbo listings have been booked during the event period, though demand is expected to climb sharply after the final match draw. Lane notes that rates could double from last year’s $170 nightly average as interest builds closer to the tournament. AirDNA is tracking the market closely, citing similarities to the Paris Olympics, where bookings surged four to five months before opening day.

There’s not scarcity yet (noting that only 3% of listings are booked so far) but demand could double rates as the event nears.
